late Gordon Bainbridge restored the Aerodrome’s Velie
Monocoupe 113 in 1977. Cole Palen called it “a dehydrated
version” of the Spirit of St. Louis. This was actually the second
airplane he ever owned, back in the early 50’s, long before Old
Rhinebeck was born. He subsequently sold it and after changing hands
a number of times he finally acquired it again. It has hung in our ‘Lindbergh Era’ gallery for many years, and is now undergoing a complete restoration. It’s our goal to have it airworthy once again to join the airshow flight line. News! - 2/25/2005: Bob Coolbaugh reports that the Velie Monocoupe restoration is moving along. The fuselage is being assembled for covering - installing wooden formers, the seat belt system, floorboard subsystem, and control cables and rods. They should be covered this spring/summer. The wings and ailerons will be next. Click on the photo to see the progress: ![]() Please note the items below that we are still on the hunt for: (1 pair) 26" x 4' wire wheels, cross-spoked (2) 3/8" Lunkenheimer or Imperial valves with 45 degree flared fitting ends, male, for flared-end copper tubing - two-way and in-line. Model A Ford interior control knobs. The knobs should have: a "C" or the word "Choke" in the center of one. An "H" or "Heat" on another and an "M" or "Mixture" on the third. The knobs are round, 3/4" to 7/8" in diameter, nickel silver plated metal or brass. They look more like buttons or the bottom of a plate - gentle, flattened dome tapering to thin at the edge. Not concave in the center, like the newer knobs and not colored plastic or metal, (1)
Original Monocoupe 113 throttle lever(1) Working Consolidated Aircraft 140 MPH Airspeed Indicator. We could use the Consolidated 160 MPH airspeed, but the 140 MPH with the 4 lobed (dog-eared) attach lugs is correct. Otherwise, we can use a good 140 MPH gauge that can be sent out to have the face silk-screened. (1) Consolidated Star Pathfinder Brass Compass. - This small compass is suspended from the fuselage cross braces. It looks like a small round globe with a convex/domed glass viewing port and two "wings" off the sides for the mounting brackets. The early GE compass with the cylindrical glass case would also be appropriate.
