In 1907 the famous French automotive firm started manufacture of aircraft engines.  This World War I example is the largest of the Renault air-cooled engines.  It was inefficient compared to contemporary engines such as the Hispano-Suiza which put out 50% more H.P. while using only two-thirds the amount of fuel.
