Specializing in two-stroke marine engines, Elbridge branched into the aviation market when aircraft builders discovered their lightly-constructed designs prior to 1910.  In 1911 the firm began to advertise their engines as "Featherweights" to target aircraft builders.  Modular construction allowed the Elbridge to be built in three-, four-, or six-cylinder versions.
