Favored by racing pilots, this speedy sport aircraft was
flown in cross-country and pylon races by Phoebe Omlie,
Johnny Livingston and Vern Roberts. In 1930 Phoebe Omlie’s
winnings were $3,250.00 when the national hourly wage was
only $.50. The Monocoupe was quite popular and sold
well when other aircraft types had difficulty on the market.
Phoebe Omlie delivered this particular aircraft to Helen Ball of Pittsburgh, PA in 1932. Phoebe later raced it in the 1933 Cleveland Air Races. Cole Palen purchased the Monocoupe from Arnold Niemann in the mid-seventies and flew it at the Aerodrome for a few years before it was retired to the museum. |
