This aircraft was built by Hank Palmer and Louis Wilgus (well-known restorers of early aircraft) in Florida. It is fitted with a "modern" W-670, 220 HP Continental radial engine to make it more suitable for movie and photography work and to insure its availability to fly in the weekend air shows at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. Cole Palen purchased this aircraft in May of 1987, and flew it from Florida to New York landing on grass runways along the East Coast all the way. Cole took the Fokker past the Statue of Liberty during his trip, which must have given New York City tourists on the Circle-Line an unexpected treat! He was baffled by the amount of wind in his face that caused his goggles to loosen throughout the flight and it wasn’t until he reached the Aerodrome that he realized that the seat height was adjustable. The wheels are thought to be original German World War I equipment according to its builders. |
