The Aeromarine is an original aircraft
from the Roosevelt Field collection that was acquired in
excellent condition. In 1966 it was burned up by
an accidentally thrown cigarette. Ironically, the Aeromarine was on an
open trailer being trucked to a site for the filming of a
cigarette advertisement at the time. Several years later Cole started to
sort through the charred remains and stored them in his
house in Rhinebeck. Tragically his house burned down in the
early 1980s with many of the remaining Aeromarine parts
inside while Cole was in Florida for the winter. A few
fittings and parts survived the two fires and it is hoped
that this elegant aircraft will one day be rebuilt using its
remaining original parts to fly once again.
